Copyright violation is a severe crime. Plus, it's sleazy.

Parts of people’s sites are very unique. For example, the look and feel of Engadget is uniquely identifiable. Even the look of TigerDirect, Yahoo, MSN and CNET are very unique. Based on their popularity, people rip them off. Blatantly.

So, tell me, check out this link and what element on that page was stolen from another site and resized, poorly? Hmm?

Why must businesses throw "dirt" – where there isn't even a mudpie nearby?

I want to know why businesses can’t just tell the truth. Why not just say it like it is, deal with the consequences and move on. Today I was able to witness the unfolding of a hearing in which the Defendant was a much larger company than the Plaintiff. Trademark infringement is being raised as the crux of the issue.

Instead of defending their research, due diligence in securing the name, admitting there was a pending opposition filed on the tradmark’s publication, and just saying, Continue reading

Global internet control shuffle continues….

TheRegister.co.uk – A new front has opened up in the global battle for control of the internet, with a heated exchange of letters between two of the main players.

The chairman of Centr – an organisation representing the needs and wishes of a large part of the world’s internet registries – has fired a broadside at internet overseeing organisation ICANN following a letter from ICANN that dismissed his organisation’s complaints.

In the most recent letter, dated 29 April, Centr chairman Paul Kane made his points bluntly, accusing ICANN of being a quasi-regulator and a “United States private-sector company” Continue reading

Affiliate Primer 101: Do Not use Domain Names for Referred Sales

When a merchant develops an affiliate program, sometimes, they are not prepared for what happens next. Basically, the roll-outs happen like this:

  • First your develop your program, partnering with an affiliate processing company (like BeFree or Comission Junction) and then you start to get signups.
  • The volume of signups has you excited and you start to see a few referred sales. It’s working!
  • You find at the end of the first or second payment, some affiliates are doing great! They have CRAPPY looking sites, but darn, they sure know how to refer sales!
  • Your Intellectual Property Monitoring Service calls you. The top 5 affiliates have all registered domain names which are redirecting to the site.
  • “SO!?” You ask.
  • We will shut them down if they do not cease and desist….

On the surface, it may seem innocent, and can’t affect you too much, right?

Urban Legends – the 'Counterfeit' Two-Dollar Bill

One very interesting web page I came across this weekend was the tale of a Counterfeit Two-Dollar Bill. After reading it. I nearly cried. It seems that urban legends are big business, and that’s why there is an entire “Urban Legends Reference Page” over at Snopes.com.

This has been floating around the internet for some time, however it is fairly well documented as being true. You tell me.

The following is a true story. It amused the hell out of me while it was happening. I hope it isn’t one of those “had to be there” things.

Radio Appearance: Dave Graveline – 05/01/05!

Into Tomorrow 05/01/05Today, the “Into Tomorrow” with Dave Graveline radio show, focused on computer peripherals. We talked with several Sirius-listening truck drivers who were having interesting wireless questions. Help was provided as best could.

One story we heard was that a gentleman, climbing into his bunch, ‘sat’ on his notebook. Well, that screen doesnt’ work anymore. He has improvised and added a standard CRT into his cab, however he really would like to replace it. Well, save yourself $1200 and get a new notebook.

Great show – see you again soon! Into tomorrow!

We are very lucky

I get to talk to my friend, stationed in the middle of the Desert in Iraq, every day. It seems surreal that he is in the military, yet, could be next door for all I know.

It’s just nice to know our guys can talk like this. It’s reassuring, esp. when he’s always online.

Keep up the good work guys! Erik – miss you bro.
