NASA’s Opportunity rover is close enough to spot the edge of the massive Victoria crater; its destination for almost 2 years. The crater is roughly 750 metres (.5 mile) across and up to 70 metres (230 feet) deep. Once the rover gets inside, it’ll be able to examine exposed rock on the crater walls. Scientists are still gathering evidence of past water conditions on the surface of Mars, and this view will be one of the best “opportunities” they’ve had so far.

The ability for convex and concave transparent objects to enlarge or reduce had been known since Antiquity and by the end of the thirteenth century; quality glass was relatively inexpensive, particularly in Italy. At the same time, techniques for grinding and polishing had reached a high state of relative precision in Venice. So, handheld magnifying glasses became relatively common. During the fourteenth century, the craftsmen of Venice began producing small double-sided convex glass disks that could be mounted and worn in a frame- the first reading glasses. By the middle of the fifteenth century the Italians were also producing spectacles that corrected for nearsightedness. Therefore, around 1450 the ingredients to produce the first telescope were in place but it would be another 150 years before children would trigger its invention and change everything.

When NASA’s Viking 1 Orbiter sent its first pictures back from Mars in 1976, one feature caught the eye – the famous “Face on Mars” in the Cydonia region. Other NASA orbiters have returned higher resolution images showing that it’s just a naturally forming rock structure. And now ESA’s Mars Express has revealed even higher resolution images, showing a new perspective view of the face.

It's Funny How All Things Come Full Circle – 1932 / 2006

The Distribution of Money according to the FDIC - 1935As the country prepares for the debut of All the Kings Men, starring Sean Penn, I decided to take the time to do the research behind the movie before I get too excited about it. The premise seemed interesting – the trailer, of course, caught my attention, so I got online. My findings are amazing. The Real Story?

In January 1932 I stood on the floor of the United States Senate and told what would happen in 1933. It all came to pass. In March 1933, a few days after Mr. Roosevelt had become President and had made a few of his moves, I said what to expect in 1934. That came to pass.

As the Congress met in the early months of 1934 and I had a chance to see the course of events for that year, I again gave my belief on what would happen by the time we met again this January 1935. I am grieved to say to you that this week I had to say on the floor of the United States Senate, “I told you so!

In 1935, the United States Government’s Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation reported that it has investigated to see who owns the money in the banks, and they wind up by showing that two-thirds of 1 percent of the people own 67 percent of all the money in the banks, showing again that the average man and the poor man have less than ever of what we have left in this country and that the big man has more of it. DVD Manufacturers Conspire to Battle Formats: Beta All Over Again

samsung_dvd.jpgLG announced today that it had considered a combo HD-DVD/BluRay Combo drive, however there is not a model currently in their product roadmap. Why must the manufacturers continue to embattle in a war that only costs the consumers? Slower single-format adoption disallows the price to drop as quickly as it would with widespread, single-format adoption.

These artifically high prices allow the manufacturers to continue to wheedle out a few extra bucks until a standard is defined. If they have the losing standard, like Sony’s Betamax, they profited through higher prices on products which were for a botique community of existing owners and devotees who were unwilling to switch to VHS, some still use the format today with fervor.
