DVD Manufacturers Conspire to Battle Formats: Beta All Over Again
LG announced today that it had considered a combo HD-DVD/BluRay Combo drive, however there is not a model currently in their product roadmap. Why must the manufacturers continue to embattle in a war that only costs the consumers? Slower single-format adoption disallows the price to drop as quickly as it would with widespread, single-format adoption.
These artifically high prices allow the manufacturers to continue to wheedle out a few extra bucks until a standard is defined. If they have the losing standard, like Sony’s Betamax, they profited through higher prices on products which were for a botique community of existing owners and devotees who were unwilling to switch to VHS, some still use the format today with fervor. Nokia introduces the 6822 with Deja Vu
Further strengthening its portfolio of 3G devices, Nokia today unveiled the new Nokia 6288, a 3G slide phone that adds high-quality video playing capabilities to its mix of features. With real-time video sharing and video ringtones, the Nokia 6288 is designed to take full advantage of the benefits of 3G technology. The Nokia 6288 is expected to begin shipping in the third quarter of 2006 with an estimated retail price of 325 EUR before subsidies or taxes.
The compact slide phone device is bundled with a 512 MB memory card making it ideal for watching favorite video clips on its bright QVGA, 262,144 color display (320×240 pixels). Outfitted with a 2-megapixel and a VGA camera, the Nokia 6288 makes it easy to share videos and participate in two-way video calls. Continue reading

Systemax Venture Reviewed to ‘do everything faster!’
While the new Intel “Duo” Chips are seemingly everywhere, a recently released review says that “Systemax does pretty much everything faster!” This a suprise annoucement for a system coming from the US # 10 PC manufacturer with retail stores and multi-channel retailers including TigerDirect.com, TigerDirect.ca among other US and European brands Global Computer Supply and Misco.
The new Systemax system features some new product from Intel, with the first all-new line of processors since the Pentium 4. These are just finding their way into PCs like the Systemax Venture model I’ve been testing for the last week or so. Continue reading

Auf weidersehen Deutschland says AOL Germany
While AOL continues to restructure itself, the most recent announcement of the sale of AOL Germany to
Telecom Italia on Sunday was no suprise. The deal was only an announcement of plans to buy Time Warner’s AOL Germany Internet access business. Reportedly, the deal was for $870 million in cash.
Telecom Italia, post acquisition, will be the second-largest broadband provider in Germany. Continue reading

Nokia E62 released for Cingular Email on-the-go!
Nokia and Cingular announced that they are now releasing the Nokia E62 – a full keyboard device to provide an alternative to the Blackberry from RIM. This is a robust, sleek device built specifically for wireless email whose attractive price promises to take superior mobile email access beyond the executive suite and into the hands of the everyday wireless user.
The Nokia E62 device will be available exclusively from Cingular in the U.S. for as low as $149.99. Measuring barely half an inch thick, it features a full QWERTY keyboard with large backlit keys for easy typing, and a sizeable, high-resolution 16 million color screen measuring 320 x 240 pixels. Whether they’re business people or consumers, Nokia E62 device users will have a variety of popular secure email platforms from which to choose. These include Good Mobile Messaging, Cingular Xpress Mail, BlackBerry Connect, Mail for Exchange (direct push corporate email from Microsoft Exchange), the Nokia push solution via Intellisync Mobile Suite from Nokia, and standard clients such as POP3, IMAP and SMTP.
