Craigslist has been unable to catch a break from the ongoing pressure by many attorney generals across the country. In response, instead of simply removing Adult Services from the lineup on their site, they have chosen to replace it with a “censored” link in reverse type.
Is this a passive-aggressive message that the government is pushing too far? Sure, a couple girls reported their story of being sold like fast food via Craigslist, but at the same time, there have been individuals who count on the Adult Services category for a living, providing legitimate services. Should the site next remove “Adult” job postings?
Last I checked, people are hired to have sex with others on a regular basis – it’s called porn. If someone can be forced to turn 12-15 tricks a day (and remember, performance is part of the job and satisfying your customer critical to achieving the end goal), how could they not be forced to also be the center of a gangbang or bukkake scene? Then should strip clubs be the next target? Where does it end?
I think that the need for people to say and do what they want, in harmony with the principals of the founding of America, is being “protected” too much by organizations in power. There was a time in this country when the Courts realized that we, as individuals, have the final say over what we consume, what pills and substances we take, all because our body is under our control, and not that of someone else.
While prostitution remains illegal, it’s not like it’s gone once the Adult Services section is removed. In fact, it lives on strong all over the web, including Craigslist. Under the guise of “therapeutic services,” lots of ‘oriental spas’ offering many services which generally end with a happy ending. But of course none of these young Asian women are being forced to do anything, are they?
