Google – Good Job! Spyware has long been a thorn in my side. Several years ago I was deeply involved in litigation regarding spyware and trying to stop it. We all know that spyware has evolved considerably over the last 10 years, but it continues to be a problem. Millions of computer users worldwide are currently having their PC used for things they aren’t even aware of – most often being used to send emails. Spam. My favorite! (Ugh!)
Google announced that they were removing paid links which although seeming to go to legitimate websites, many were redirecting to search results and other pages which would perform a ‘drive-by download,’ where the person is generally not aware an application is being installed on their computer. This can be done a myriad of ways, and they seem to try them all – but now Google is going to stop as much of it as they can.
It’s interesting to note that Google made a clear distinction regarding ‘paid links’ and not general search result listings, as it’s a much bigger field in which to find the bad guys, but hopefully they will make strides in that arena as well. Finally, it’s important that Google also realize that they contribute to the ‘spam’ listings on the web and endless paid ads on their service which are simply redirections to pages of results from, yep you guessed it, Google.
They aren’t too dumb – you pay 25¢ for a term that results in an average click through price of 40¢ to you – you make 15¢ per visitor – not a bad sum if you get enough traffic. It’s a big numbers game that millions play – and win.
With pending national spyware legislation, it’s important that you report any illicit software installations to ensure everyone’s voice is heard. It’s just enough already.
