Hitting that middle-of-life bump – ouch!

Turning 40 in the last several months has seeminly started to take its toll. Allowing myself to run out of contacts (again) and have only 1 in for the last month or so, I figured it was time for me not to refill my lenses, but get a new exam. Going to my regular optometrist, I was greeted by a new doctor with a fresh perspective.

I have worn the same strength Acuvue lenses for many years – in excess of 10. Last year it seemed that the doc was going to give toric lenses a try, however due to lack of availability of samples for proper fitting, eventually the doc put me back on the same track I was on. Today’s doc and I had a pretty good discussion. Ever notice when people hold something farther away from them to read it? Yeah, it’s generally people over 40.

Including me. So, the ‘do I need bifocals, reating glasses?’ disucssion ensued. In lieu of either, she recommended that the lenses be mixed with correct (Left: -7.00) and undercorrected (Right: -6.00) to allow for close-up reading while maintaining clear distanct vision. But my head hurts. I have had a headache most of the day. After not wearing a right lens for so long, that may be the issue, however with these new Acuvue Astigmatism lenses, who knows. I do know that the mixture of what equates to a lesser prescription with the shape correction – it’s a whole new experience.

Top that off with the waiver I signed saying I shouldn’t wear these lenses more than six hours a day is also disturbing (*as she smiled). Should anything change, I’ll give an update, but my point is.

I’m one of the people who have to hold something away from them to read it.
