NEW DELHI – (IndiaTimes) – When the government gave its nod to the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) to start registering ‘.in’ domains, it had obviously not foreseen the kind of rush there could be to acquire the latest, and the hippest, in Indian domain addresses.
But just two days prior to the ‘.in’ domains being thrown open to public at large, a handful of registrars and sub-registrars are believed to have gone ahead and pre-booked a large number of generic domain names.
Industry experts also point to the possibility that a large number of ‘.in’ domains belonging to known organizations and brands may also have been pre-booked by unscrupulous people in a bid to make a fast buck.
This has raised fears of large-scale misuse and could lead to a number of litigations in the coming months Æ’_” a prospect that the country’s cyber and trademark lawyers would be salivating at.
When contacted, NIXI’s CEO Amitabh Singhal said, Æ’_oas of now, all indications point towards a great response by the public for booking their ‘.in’ names. However, NIXI will be very pro-active and take all necessary measures to ensure that the genuine domain owners and the public at large do not face any inconvenience.Æ’__
Æ’_oNIXI is committed towards maintaining an open, fair and transparent regime of domain registrations. We want it to be an example for other domain name practices worldwide,Æ’__ he added.
However, cyber law expert Pavan Duggal feels cyber squatting is a phenomenon that could not be wished away. Æ’_oBarring a list of reserved names, a very large number of generic names will be available to anyone on a ‘first come first served’ basis. If anybody feels that a specific domain name should rightfully belong to him, he will have to go in for online arbitration as per the norms that NIXI lays down in its arbitration framework in the coming days.Æ’__
Over a dozen registrars and a score of sub-registrars have been making bookings for the ‘.in’ domains for the past few weeks and will submit their applications on February 16.
As per industry estimates, over 50,000 advance booking requests for registration have been made with these registrars already. Though most of these bookings would be genuine, industry experts feel that a significant number of requests would also belong to what is popularly referred to as ‘cyber squatting’ and ‘generic domain grabbing’.
