Sony PS/2 Black Slimline - front shotSony planning deep PS2 (PlayStation 2) discount to counter the Xbox 360 launch?

sPOnG reports that

UK retail sources indicate that Sony is slashing the Sony PS2 prices for this Christmas season to try to give the Microsoft XBox 360 a harder time. The prices for the slim PS2 should be about US$100.

Additionally, Sony plans major PS2 game releases to grab attention. Will this work? It maybe can distract some consumers from jumping to the next generation system. At least it means for Microsoft to turn on the really big marketing wheel, which they anyway are going to do. (Hmmmf, by the way, how did Sony get away with using the PS2 moniker without IBM licensing? Ah, they are on the PowerPC platform, aren’t they? Hmmmf. )

You gotta wonder, even with a significant discount, are there really all that many people who are still in the market for a current-generation console?

Also of note, Sony started to sell a ceramic white slim Sony Playstation 2 in Japan.

White Slim! The white really looks nice on the PS2, at least from the photos. The SCPH-70000 CW console ships from around $219.00 internationally. Those PS2 are Japanese NTSC models. The white PS2 would fit perfectly in the portable Sony PS2 display shown at Computex. Sony also has a product page for the white PS2 on its Japanese playstation site (Japanese).

Besides the black slim PS2 that is available globally there is also a silver PS2 on the market in Europe.
