While joyous articles announcing the return of a Veterans Affairs laptop containing nearly 30 million individual records — the bigger issue hasn’t been addressed -
Who is allowed to download 30 million records, including FULL social security number, birthdate, etc and then plop them onto a laptop which is then taken home ‘to work on?’ How can someone work with 30MM records on a notebook? In light of there being no Federal Data Security regulations, common sense and standard IT security protocols should cover such a data loss in any company.
