Anyone who has read my blog know that I go in erratic periods of activity. Sorry - it’s based upon my overall ability to have time to do it, be thorough and make a point, but more importantly, I must find proper inspiration. Sure, I could write many pieces daily if forced to under threat of being shot, but you’d become bored of my blather - instead, I seek pure inspiration - something must ‘move’ me.

Today, Reuters got me - seems two Chinese coal miners survived six days burrowing out of a collapsed tunnel by eating coal and drinking their urine. Yep, you heard it right - coal and piss. While I have been forced by medical staff to drink a soda can full of coal-like carbon stuff when they thought I had a toxic level of my inhaler in my system (no such luck), it was a horrible experience - but to eat “finger sized pieces of coal” would not be, as the miner described, ‘fragrant’, in my book.

None the less, this story brings much more to light. The report continues on to explain that they didn’t defecate during their stay in the tunnel, with a fare of coal daily, however found a pile of the black coal on it’s way back out of their system, or as the story reports:

“We were only able to do that [defecate] the day before yesterday in hospital. It was full of coal.”

This is the latest in rare stories of survivors drinking urine for survival in extreme situations. The miners in this incident said they would only take only a sip at a time from water bottles they found discarded in the mine.

and when you’ve finished, you just want to cry.”

This article really went “over” the edge in full bodily function reporting. Guess the blogosphere loves this kinda stuff and sometimes the weirder the better it seems on “Top Viewed” stories on various web news sites.

However, once you get to the second page of the article, a hidden gem appears which gives the ruling agencies in China some credit. Last week flood last week trapper nearly 200 miners. The report then mentions…

…officials began handing compensation to families of 181 miners trapped and presumed dead after a flood last week in eastern China.

That means that the families were receiving money a week after tragedy struck them. Not weeks, not months, not years as many people still suffering from Katrina’s wake in New Orleans are - but in one week they had a check in their hand. Our leaders should take note of this incredible show of humanity - when people need it most. We should strive to be so noble to our own countrymen.

So, there you have it - a hidden gem in a sultry article!
