According to a report in the New York Times calling to an end the five-year span in which the Lower-Manhattan Development Group operated to help assist in the redevelopment of the Word Trade Center. This organization has been a great community organization, interacting with the public more so than most other offices. Burdened with the disbursement of several billions in financial aid, the time has come where the remainder of the project will just fall into place with existing governmental organizations.
To my surprise, it seems that the article mentions there is a building, still there, which has not been removed and ‘harbors untold numbers of human remains.’?? I’m not sure I just read that correctly. Are they saying that after five years that there are still human remains that are just amongst the rubble of a building within the Word Trade Center complex?
The Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center is likely to assume responsibility for the deconstruction of the former Deutsche Bank tower at 130 Liberty Street, which was badly damaged and contaminated on Sept. 11, 2001, and harbors untold numbers of human remains. This has been one of the corporation’s most difficult and contentious endeavors.“We’ve always questioned the wisdom of having the L.M.D.C. involved in that project, given that they have no background in environmental issues,� said Julie Menin, the chairwoman of Community Board 1 in Lower Manhattan.
Speaking generally of the corporation’s end, she said: “If elected officials have more of a direct role, rather than through an intermediary, this might be a step in the right direction. It’s one less layer of bureaucracy.�
She added, “It’s very unfortunate that we’re approaching the five-year anniversary and we still have a hole in the heart of our community.�

With a little digging, I found this press release detailing the $90MM purchase of the Deutsche Bank by the LMDC as well as provided $45MM in demolition expenses. It seems that black mold formed inside the building, making it unsafe for workers, plus the large piece of Tower 2 which hit the building during it’s collapse caused a 15 story ‘gash’ in the building, which has remained enshrouded in a black veil over the past several years.
Why has it taken over two years for this project, estimated to take 5-7 months upon commencement of the project to get done? It’s been FIVE YEARS since the attacks. Isn’t it time?
