Palm, PalmOne, whatever the companies name is these days, has finally gotten admitted. Admitted to be in cahoots with Microsoft. Finally.
First, Palm took the lead in handheld OS. Microsoft paid it little attention, their CE software was all they intended to use, and Palm can’t be a threat, we own the desktop. And then, Microsoft quietly worked with other hardware manufacturers, including VOQ, Audiovox, and Qtek/iMate while Palm fourished. They had their heyday – which ended with the Palm VIIx. Oh, she was a beauty with her lovely plastic popcicle-stick looking flip-up antenna and 16 shades of grey display – even when TigerDirect.com liquited about 144,000 units of the product at the end-of-life closeout. Then, Microsoft took over. If Palm was the best OS for simplicity, why did a new platform even get developed for handhelds – Nokia’s use of symbian only smacks the face of Palm – the mobile leader.
Well, MS has finally gotten in Palm’s “pants� with their recent announcment of a Windows Powered Palm Handheld for Verizon Wireless (story from Reuters):
