Sony, in their wisdom, enabled DVD movie based parental controls in the forthcoming PlayStation 3 (PS3) and people are already griping. It is commendable. We all think it’s not big deal, but remember, some children shouldn’t see some things. Well, one thing they should see is the sexy new design of the PS3. Wow! She’s a looker!
The announcement was made by ESA President Doug Lowenstein who commended the PlayStation 3 console manufacturers for voluntarily implementing the parental control technology. DRM wasn’t mentioned, however we can be assured with a Sony label on the product, it will have a plenty.
Sony’s not the First
Microsoft placed parental controls in its Xbox 360, which went on sale last week. The machine lets users restrict access to video games and DVDs that carry certain ratings, such as T for teenager or M for mature. There was a lot of hubbub earlier this year over the ESRB’s decision to change the rating on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas from “M” to “AO.” It also offers parental controls on the company’s Xbox Live online gaming service, limiting who their children can interact with.
Of course, not to be outdone, Nintendo announced that it’s next console, being released in 2006, will also have similar parental control technology. The Revolution is suspect to be a “make or break” platform for the children-affiliated (Can you say Mario?) Nintendo gaming system. With the high power and incredible games available in the MS and PS platforms, a wide adoption of the best games for the Nintendo platform, at any time, has been minimial, save for Nintendo reincarnations of Mario and his friends.
Well, I like watching little Mario run around on mushrooms, but then again, serious gamer I am not.
I gotta get back to checking online about my ePod. It arrived, it has a PCMCIA modem in the slot and expects me to connect a tablet to a phone line? C’mon fellas!
